REVIEW:
Taste: I am going to be honest with you: I am totally a granola type of lady. As someone who doesn’t indulge in much sugar, I find the little clusters to be a divine and instant rush. The crunch! The sweetness! The melding of textures! That being said, I only can manage to chow on granola every once in a great while for the very reasons… I love it so much. All that sugar gives me adrenaline spikes that crash hard and the crunch makes me eat more and more and more. Instant belly ache!
Kaia Foods offers a little something different with this granola, something that is much lighter and more satiating than your average cereal breakfast. Because it is made with buckwheat instead of oats, there is an airiness present. Each bite fills the mouth with explosions of spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and pepita all have their moments and it is almost necessary to chew extra slowly in order to fully experience each one.
Nutritionally, this is calorically dense for what it is. Although the flavor is light and every single ingredient listed is certainly healthy (you will find no gluten, soy, sugar, dairy, etc. here!) it is worth mentioning that this is a product that is probably best eaten regularly by active people.
The buckwheat kernels are earthy and satiating without being the total gut bomb that oat based granolas can be. The delightful puffs are sweetened with agave and dates, which not only packs more sustained energy for the calorie intake, it also blends seamlessly with the more basic taste of the buckwheat. This granola is nuanced: the depth of the spices blended with the walnuts and pumpkin seeds distinctly call on pumpkin pie. If Thanksgiving gluttony could make a love child with a health conscious foodie, this granola would be it.
Labeling: The labeling is simple and succinct in terms of nutrition but I had a difficult time discerning if the granola was certified gluten free. The package claims it as “gluten free and raw” but I see no actual certification.
Packaging: The packaging is bright, clean, and simple. It is a resealable plastic bag and contains 6 1/2 cup servings per bag.
