REVIEW:
After seeing good reviews for Conte’s Pierogies online, I was excited to try them.  If you aren’t familiar with what pierogies are, they are Polish dumplings filled with potatoes, onions and sometimes meat that can be boiled, baked or fried.  Conte’s has come up with a gluten free version of this popular Polish dumpling.  They come in Potato & Onion and Potato & Cheese with onion varieties.

Cooking these things is simple enough.  Just place the frozen pierogies in boiling water and cook for 8-10 minutes.  I’m not sure if it was because the pierogies weren’t frozen enough or if the water was too hot or some other reason, but many of the pierogies ended up falling apart and spilled their filling out.  This made for a huge mess when draining out the water.  What we ended up with was a not so pretty pierogi mash.  Despite this little mishap, we went on with preparing our dish.

In the past, we have reviewed a couple of Conte’s other products and they were great.  Combining that with the good reviews I saw for these pierogies, I had pretty high expectations.  Unfortunately, these pierogies did not live up to my expectations.   The texture of the gluten free dough was good, soft and smooth like regular pierogies, however we found the filling to be a little bland, which made the overall taste of the pierogies a bit bland.  These pierogies are also a little on the expensive side.  The cost ranges from $8.11 to $13.37 per 12 ounce package depending where you purchase it from.  We really wanted to like Conte’s Pierogies, but the high cost and the bland flavor makes that a little hard.

Taste: The dough has good texture, however the stuffing was a little bland.

Labeling:  The labeling on this package is good.  They are clearly labeled wheat free and gluten free.  Although this product is not made in a wheat free facility, they do note that they practice good manufacturing practices to segregate ingredients in the facility.

Packaging:  The packaging is your typical frozen dumpling package containing about 12 pierogies.  Unfortunately, this package does not have a zip lock seal at the top so if you plan to split them up into different cooking sessions, you will have to use a rubber band to seal it or transfer it into your own freezer safe zip lock bag.
